What Does a Moissanite Certificate Really Tell You? GRA, 925 Silver & Buying With Confidence

A certificate can be useful, but it should never be the only reason you trust a piece of jewelry. Here is what to check when choosing moissanite, sterling silver and a design that feels right for you.

The short answer

A GRA-branded moissanite document may describe a stone, but it is not the same thing as a GIA diamond grading report. S925 identifies sterling silver's metal content, not gemstone quality. The best buying decision comes from understanding the gemstone, metal, finish, fit, documentation and seller's terms together.

01

What is moissanite—and is it a diamond?

Moissanite is a gemstone with a chemical composition and crystal structure different from diamond. Most jewelry-grade moissanite is laboratory-created. It can produce lively rainbow flashes of light, sometimes called fire, but it should not be represented as a natural diamond or a laboratory-grown diamond.

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) explains the distinction between diamond simulants, including moissanite, and diamonds. Knowing what the gemstone actually is should be your first step before comparing price or paperwork.

For a deeper explanation, read Dreamall's Learn About Moissanite guide.

02

What does a GRA moissanite certificate mean?

Some moissanite jewelry is supplied with paperwork commonly described as a GRA certificate. Depending on the document, it may state a report number and characteristics such as the stone's size, color or clarity.

However, a document bearing the GRA name should not automatically be treated as equivalent to a GIA diamond grading report, nor does a report number alone establish that every statement on the document has been independently verified. The name GRA is used across different websites and sellers, so consumers should check who issued the specific document and what testing, if any, it represents.

What to ask the seller:

Is the document included with this exact piece? Who issued it? Does its report number correspond to the stone? What information is independently verified, and what is supplied by the manufacturer or seller?

At Dreamall, any mention of GRA documentation should be read alongside the individual product's eligibility and stated inclusions. A certificate does not replace checking the product description, stone identity, metal, finish and purchase terms.

03

Is GRA the same as GIA?

No. The initials may look similar, but they should not be treated as interchangeable. GIA is an established gemological institute that publishes research and provides specific laboratory services and reports. A GRA-branded moissanite document is not a GIA report.

GIA explains that moissanite is a diamond simulant, and a simulant is not a diamond. This is why shoppers should avoid interpreting phrases such as “diamond-like” or “diamond tester passed” as proof that a gemstone is diamond.

See the GIA guide to diamond simulants for a professional explanation of gemstone identity and appearance.

04

What does S925 sterling silver mean?

925 sterling silver describes an alloy containing 92.5% silver, with the remainder made up of other metals used to improve practical strength. The number describes the metal composition—not the quality grade of the gemstone or the value of a completed piece.

According to Jewelers of America, sterling silver can tarnish with time and exposure, even when the material is genuine. A 925 stamp is a quality mark, not a guarantee that the piece can never discolor or require care.

What if the jewelry looks gold?

A gold-colored option can still have an S925 sterling silver base with a gold-colored plating. It should not be assumed to be solid 18K gold unless the product explicitly says so. Always read the base-metal and plating descriptions together.

For everyday maintenance, see Dreamall's Jewelry Care Guide and the FTC's consumer information about silver.

A better checklist before buying moissanite jewelry

  1. Gemstone identity: Is the center stone moissanite, diamond, another gem or a combination?
  2. Metal composition: Is the base S925 sterling silver, solid gold or something else?
  3. Plating: Is the color produced by rhodium or gold-colored plating, and what care is recommended?
  4. Stone size and setting: Are dimensions, proportions and setting style clear?
  5. Documentation: Is a certificate or report included with this exact item, and what does it actually establish?
  6. Fit: Have you checked ring size, necklace length or bracelet measurements?
  7. Timing: Is the item ready to ship or made after ordering? Check the product's displayed dispatch and delivery estimates.
  8. After-sales support: Read the store's return policy and eligibility conditions before purchasing.

These questions matter more than any single logo or certificate image. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission's Jewelry Guides emphasize accurate descriptions of precious metals and gemstones.

Frequently asked questions

Does a GRA certificate prove my moissanite is a diamond?

No. Moissanite and diamond are different gemstone materials. A moissanite document should never be presented as proof that the stone is diamond.

Does every moissanite piece include a GRA certificate?

Do not assume so. Check the exact product listing and its stated eligibility or ask customer support before ordering.

Does 925 mean the jewelry is pure silver?

No. Sterling silver contains 92.5% silver; the remainder is other alloying metals.

Can a sterling silver ring have a gold-colored finish?

Yes. The base can be sterling silver with a plated finish. Check the listing for the exact material and finish, and do not confuse gold-colored plating with solid gold.

What matters most when choosing jewelry online?

Accurate material information, useful dimensions, clear photos, fit, realistic fulfillment estimates, return terms and a design you genuinely want to wear.
